On Margo

Margo gives very little away in the first ten minutes, and nobody seems to mind. 166 cm, slim. Straight dark brown hair, long. Brown eyes that appear to be reading the room while the rest of her stays perfectly still. Her taste runs to the vintage lounge: a bias-cut dress in deep plum, a velvet jacket, a brooch that once belonged to somebody interesting and has never been explained. Ask about it and she smiles, which is not an answer.

Refined, calm and slightly mysterious. Early thirties. English in a low, even register. Contemporary art is the serious passion; she follows the auction calendar the way others follow a football season. Evenings at home she plays the piano, mostly for herself, mostly after dark. Her favourite sale is the one where nothing she liked reached its estimate. Gardening is the surprise, a walled plot of herbs and white flowers tended in old leather gloves and never once photographed.

In St James's she likes to begin at Christie's on King Street during a viewing week, when the rooms are open to anyone and the walls carry lots that will change hands within days. She walks slowly and says little. Then, in front of one particular picture, she says a great deal. She never names a price, only what a picture is worth to her. Supper afterwards is close and discreet, somewhere she can talk about what she saw without being overheard.

Margo lives in Knightsbridge and prefers to be introduced in St James's, among the galleries. From £600 for an hour; a fuller picture is on rates. The desk is reached through booking.

// Octavia's noteMargo is at her best in viewing weeks, when the King Street rooms are hung. The dinner date at £1,800 allows a proper look at the saleroom and an unhurried supper.

05 // an evening

As Margo keeps it

She arrives without announcement, already in the room before you notice. Margo prefers to begin with art when there is any to be seen, and she walks a viewing the way a pianist reads a score, steadily, pausing where the music changes. She will ask which work you would take home, then tell you honestly whether you chose well. At supper she is calm and attentive, and her conversation has depth without weight: a sale once watched from the back row, a composer she plays only in winter, white roses that finally took hold against her wall. She reveals herself slowly and never completely. By the end you know more about her than you expected and much less than you would like, which is exactly the charm.

? // in her words

Three questions for Margo

The piece everybody walks past. There is always one, hung a little too high or too close to the door, and it is often the most honest thing on the walls.

Rarely, and only Debussy, and only when the piano is in another room so nobody can watch my hands.

Because then it becomes something to show. I would rather it stayed something to look after, mine and nobody else's.
