On Michelle

Michelle talks to strangers, and strangers are glad of it. 173 cm, curvy, dark brown hair falling straight and long, eyes brown, and a warmth that reaches people before she has said very much. Soft, rose-toned colours and fluid fabrics are her signature: a blush silk shirt, a long skirt, gold hoops. She looks as comfortable in a museum gallery as in a hotel bar, and in both she will know the staff by name within the hour.

Elegant, nurturing, happily chatty. Late twenties. English with an easy, open warmth. Sailing is her summer, crewing on the south coast whenever anyone asks. Museums fill the rest of the year, and she likes the small ones best, the houses where someone actually lived and left their slippers under the chair. She also mixes a very good drink at home and will tell you the one thing most bars get wrong. Her pockets often hold a length of cord with a sailing knot in progress.

Near Green Park her favourite beginning is Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner, the Duke of Wellington's home, known as Number One London, with its long gallery of paintings and silver. She arrives in the last hour of opening, then walks back along Piccadilly as the lights come on, towards a drink and supper. The silver alone is worth the detour, she says, and she is right.

Michelle's home is Chelsea. She meets guests all around Green Park, from Hyde Park Corner to the Ritz end of Piccadilly. Hourly from £600, with the rest of the ladder on rates; message Octavia through booking.

// Octavia's noteMichelle is a natural for an afternoon that becomes an evening. Start at Hyde Park Corner before closing time and take three hours at £1,500.

05 // an evening

As Michelle keeps it

Within five minutes Michelle knows your name, which airport you landed at, and the London sight you have been promising yourself for years. She is easy company from the first handshake, curious and kind, and she makes a strange city feel like somewhere you already know. She likes to open with a museum hour, walking you through a room she loves and sharing the gossip behind the portraits. Then a drink, about which she will certainly have an opinion. Supper is warm and full of stories: a regatta that went wrong, a skipper who lost his hat overboard, the tiny house museum everyone should visit once. You leave feeling looked after in the nicest possible way, and slightly better informed about the Duke of Wellington.

? // in her words

Three questions for Michelle

Dilution. A cocktail needs a little water from the ice. Most arrive either watery or fierce, and the good ones sit just in between.

Any house where you can still see how someone lived. I like knowing where they sat, and what they looked at from the window.

Whatever the skipper shouts. Usually trimming the sails, and making the tea when the wind drops.
