On Jasmin

At 160 cm, Jasmin is usually the smallest person in a room and almost never the quietest. Petite. Chestnut brown hair, long and straight, and brown eyes with a glint held in reserve. She dresses with a dancer's instinct for movement: a skirt that swings, a heel she can turn on, a top in one clear colour. Scent registers with her before shoes do, and she will tell you, kindly, what you are wearing.

Curious and bright, early twenties, she fires off questions like toasts at a wedding, frequently and with enthusiasm. Her English is fast and full of laughter. Salsa is her weekly discipline; she takes class on Tuesdays and dances socially whenever the band deserves it. Cocktails are her other study. She knows why a classic is built the way it is and can explain it in one sentence without ever becoming a bore.

Her St James's evening starts at The American Bar at The Stafford, a room hung with old photographs and keepsakes at the end of a quiet lane, where she orders something stirred and asks the bartender for his own favourite. After that, dinner can be anywhere within walking distance. She likes to learn the plan as it unfolds, and detours delight her. A wrong turning, in her view, is simply a longer evening.

Soho is home, a ten minute walk from St James's, so a late invitation rarely troubles her. The hour is £600, the rest is on rates, and Octavia replies to every request made through booking.

// Octavia's noteJasmin suits a late start. Ninety minutes at £900 is plenty for a drink and a walk; for dinner as well, take the three hours.

05 // an evening

As Jasmin keeps it

She comes in smiling, already curious about the room. Jasmin would rather sit at the bar than a table, near enough to watch the drinks being built, and she will make you guess what is in hers before she tells you. The first half hour is quick and funny. Your work, your travels, whether you have ever danced badly in public: she wants all of it, and she has a story of her own ready if you have not. Dinner is chosen for flavour over fashion. Later, if a song she loves drifts out of a doorway, she stops mid-sentence to listen, then laughs at herself. Good company in the most direct sense: the hours move fast and leave nothing heavy behind.

? // in her words

Three questions for Jasmin

A daiquiri, at a friend's kitchen table, with far too much lime. Three ingredients and nowhere to hide. I still make it the same way.

That I cannot commit. Orange blossom for daytime, something smoky for night, and one bottle of rose I only open in winter.

Anyone who can walk and laugh at the same time. The steps come later. The laughing is the important part.
