The first impression is height. The second is composure. The third, which arrives much later, is a joke so dry that you only laugh on the way home.
Violetta stands 178 cm, tall and slender as a lamp post in a Whistler nocturne, black hair sleek and straight to well below the shoulders, brown eyes that give very little away at first. Her style is sleek and golden: a column dress in dark gold or black, bare arms, a heavy cuff at one wrist, nothing that competes with her height. She moves slowly and deliberately, and in a crowded room the effect is to make everyone else seem slightly hurried.
Mysterious, elegant and entirely sure of herself. Early thirties. Her English is low and never hurried. Long-distance swimming is her discipline, early, in cold water whenever she can find it. Bookshops are her refuge; she can spend an afternoon among the shelves and come out with a single slim volume. Stand-up comedy is her unlikely love, and she understands the timing of a joke better than most people who tell them for a living.
Her evening near Albemarle Street often begins at Waterstones on Piccadilly, in the grand old Simpsons building, where floor after floor of books gives her time to decide what kind of evening it is going to be. She will hand you a book she thinks you should read, then lead the way towards a drink and supper in St James's.

As Violetta keeps it
Punctual to the minute, tall and composed, she arrives and the room seems briefly to rearrange itself around her. Violetta begins quietly, with a drink and very few words, perfectly comfortable letting silence do part of the work. Then, gradually, the conversation opens: a dawn swim in a lido nobody else would enter, a secondhand shop where she found a first edition for the price of a coffee, a comedian she saw in a room of twenty people who now sells out theatres. Her humour is dry and catches you off guard. Supper is elegant and unhurried. By the end the mystery has not quite lifted, but you have laughed far more than you expected, and that, she would say, is the right balance.
