On Milena

Milena does not do vague. Ask her something and an answer comes back, usually a good one, delivered with a look that suggests she enjoyed being asked. 175 cm, curvy. Black hair, long and perfectly straight. Brown eyes. Her style is high shine and editorial: a sharply cut dress, a strong lip, heels that add height she hardly needs. Heads turn when she arrives, and she long ago stopped noticing.

Glamorous, fierce and entirely straightforward. Mid twenties. English, confident and fast. Tennis is her sport, played hard and early. Ceramics is her quiet side; she throws bowls on a wheel in a west London studio and keeps only the imperfect ones. Espresso is the daily ritual, taken standing at a counter, never with sugar, never in a paper cup. She has no patience for flattery and a great deal for honesty. Ask for her verdict on your tie and you will receive it, kindly but completely. Her backhand, she says, is the most honest thing about her.

Her St James's evening starts at Dukes Bar, a small, hushed room tucked into St James's Place, where the martinis are made at your table and poured painfully cold. She will have one. She will also tell you, frankly, whether you should order a second. Supper follows somewhere with good lighting and no background music, because she came to talk. If the answer about the second martini is yes, she will join you.

South Kensington is home; St James's is fifteen minutes by cab. The hour is £600 and nothing about her pricing is complicated, as rates shows. Octavia answers through booking, and short notice rarely bothers her.

// Octavia's noteMilena is decisive and likes the same in others. Tell me the hotel and the hour; ninety minutes at £900 suits a drink at Dukes, two hours at £1,100 adds supper.

05 // an evening

As Milena keeps it

She walks in, surveys the room and decides where you are sitting. Milena is not bossy, simply certain, and most people find that a relief after a day of decisions. The first drink is short and serious. She asks what you actually do, not what your job title claims, and laughs out loud when the answer is better than expected. The talk moves quickly, from a tennis match she refused to lose, to the uneven bowl she is proudest of, to the best espresso counter in Kensington. At supper she is glamorous without being grand, frank about what she likes and generous with her attention. She neither flatters nor pretends. By the end, that directness feels like the most luxurious thing about her.

Three questions for Milena

Singles. In doubles there is always someone else to blame, and I prefer knowing exactly whose fault it was, even when it was mine.

The perfect ones look bought. A wobble in the rim proves a person made it, on one particular afternoon.

Short menu, loud grinder, no syrups on the counter, and a barista who does not smile too much. If they ask how sweet I would like it, I leave.
