On Luna

Luna does not wait to be told where an evening is going. As a rule, she has already booked it. 171 cm and curvy, with long dark auburn hair that turns properly red under a streetlamp and brown eyes that hold their ground. Her style is bold and modern, a strong colour, a clean line, a bare shoulder, worn with complete conviction and not a trace of apology. She dislikes dithering, loves a plan and changes it only for something better.

Independent, direct, excellent company. Early twenties, with a low, quick laugh and English to match. Theatre is the first love, new writing above all, and she will go twice when the first visit surprised her. A film camera follows her everywhere, thirty-six frames at a time. Wine is the third passion, pursued with more discipline than you might guess: she tastes blind with friends, keeps score in a ledger and loses gracefully, most of the time. Ask about the worst play she ever sat through; the answer is a small comic performance in itself.

Her evening near St James's is built around the Theatre Royal Haymarket, the old playhouse behind its columned portico, all red plush and gilt inside. A box if one is free, the stalls if not, and supper afterwards within walking distance so the argument about the ending can start at once. She tends to win it, though she is fair about the second act.

Luna lives in Mayfair, so a supper in St James's is a walk rather than a ride. Her hour is £600 and the dinner date £1,800, both on rates. Octavia confirms the evening through booking.

// Octavia's noteLuna's ideal booking is a play and supper, which is the dinner date at £1,800. She likes to know the production in advance and will have a view by the interval.

05 // an evening

As Luna keeps it

She waits beneath the portico with the tickets in one hand and a camera in her bag. Luna likes to reach a theatre early and watch the audience before the stage, and she will quietly point out the couple plainly on a first date and the critic pretending not to take notes. Once the curtain rises she disappears into it entirely. At the interval she wants something cold in a glass and your honest opinion, not the polite version. Supper is lively. She argues well, concedes gracefully and switches to wine the moment she senses the table has had enough of the playwright. Decisive, generous, never dull, she sets the tempo from the first bell to the last glass, and nobody minds following it.

? // in her words

Three questions for Luna

An ending I did not see coming, and a second act that only makes sense the second time. That is rare, and I chase it.

Thirty-six chances per roll. It makes me decide what matters before I press the shutter, which is a good rule for most things.

You never entirely do. You just lose less often by trusting your first instinct and never the label you hope it is.
