W2 escorts, Paddington to Bayswater: a postcode best read by its tables

W2 · by introduction

Where does a man staying in W2 go for dinner, if he would rather not ride back into the West End for it? Nearer than he expects. W2 has no single restaurant quarter. It has a handful of dining streets that barely resemble each other, and choosing between them is choosing the evening. W2 escorts from this house go where the table is: tell Octavia the street and the hour, and your companion comes straight to it, dressed for that room, usually about an hour after Octavia confirms, with the exact time given in the chat and the rest set out on the rates.

The addresses here are landmarks, not partners, and we give the postcode rather than the name. She can meet you in the bar downstairs or at your door, whichever you prefer, and the room is confirmed once in the chat.

The Edgware Road, in two alphabets

The western side of the Edgware Road, above Marble Arch, is W2, and for decades it has been London's Arab high street. Lebanese kitchens, bakeries stacking flatbread in the window, juice counters, shop signs in Arabic beside the English. Dinner here is a table of small dishes arriving all at once, grilled meat to follow, and on a mild night a seat under an awning where the shisha pipes glow along the pavement. It is loud, generous and unhurried, the right choice for a guest who wants appetite more than hush.

Queensway, then Westbourne Grove

Queensway runs north from the park's edge and has long been known for its Chinese dining rooms, lacquered meats hanging in the windows and round tables set for large families. Turn west at the top onto Westbourne Grove and the mood changes entirely: brasseries, bakeries and small cafés drifting towards Notting Hill, where the tables belong to the neighbourhood rather than to visitors. One street is a feast, the other a supper, and escorts in W2 dress for either.

Connaught Village, the quiet corner

West of the Edgware Road and just north of Hyde Park, the few streets around Connaught Street and Porchester Place call themselves Connaught Village. Independent shops, a handful of small restaurants and cafés, mostly residents on the pavements. It is the place in W2 for a dinner where conversation matters more than the room. Its eastern edge is the Edgware Road, and across the junction at Marble Arch Park Lane begins.

By the canal, and under the station roof

Behind Paddington station, the basin at the end of the Grand Union Canal's Paddington Arm has been rebuilt with offices and flats, and restaurants and bars now line the water beneath them, narrowboats moored alongside. It is at its best for an early drink before dinner elsewhere. Beneath Brunel's great iron and glass roof, the station feeds the traveller with an hour to spare, but nobody plans an evening there.

Asked about W2

Brief answers, kept on file. Octavia answers anything further in writing.

Ask Octavia

Connaught Village, first. Westbourne Grove comes a close second. Queensway and the Edgware Road are both built for company and noise, which is their charm, and a quiet word there needs to be said twice.

On a warm evening, yes: under the awnings along the Edgware Road, or at the waterside tables of the canal basin behind the station. By day there are cafés beside the Serpentine in Hyde Park, which suit a slow lunch before an evening begins.

For some guests it is exactly right. Shared plates break the ice, and nobody has to fill a silence over the noise. Where the conversation needs quiet, dine in Connaught Village and stroll to the Edgware Road afterwards for mint tea on the pavement.
