On Samanta
Samanta has a violinist's stillness. When she listens, she listens completely, and the room seems to lower its voice around her. Slim and 174 cm tall, dark brown hair kept long and glossy, eyes a level, unhurried brown. She dresses in a sleek, dark palette: a black tailored dress, a long coat, one silver cuff, heels that somehow make no sound on marble. She is the kind of guest a maître d' remembers, and she remembers him back.
Elegant, composed and quietly magnetic. Late twenties. English with a precise, pleasing rhythm. The violin arrived early in her life and never left; she still practises most days, scales first, always. Languages she studies purely for pleasure, slowly and in notebooks, though English is the one she speaks in company. Her travel habit is design hotels, chosen for the staircases, the lamps and the view from the breakfast room, and she remembers every one of them in detail. Her list of favourite staircases runs to three pages.
Close to home, her favourite room is Brown's Hotel on Albemarle Street, and the Donovan Bar within it, dark and hushed, its walls lined with black and white photographs. She will take one drink there before supper and tell you which hotels, in which cities, have ever quite matched it. The list is short. On a quiet night she will ask the bartender which photograph he would take home, and she has never heard the same answer twice.
Samanta lives in Mayfair, close enough to Albemarle Street to walk there in heels. The hour is £600 and weekends away start from £6,000; rates has the full ladder, and Octavia arranges travel through booking.
// Octavia's noteSamanta is my first thought for travel: composed at airports, easy in any lobby, content with a long itinerary. In London, the dinner date at £1,800 gives her evening the space it deserves.

As Samanta keeps it
She is already seated when you arrive, a glass untouched in front of her, and she rises to greet you with a composure that sets the tone for all that follows. Samanta prefers a hotel bar to begin: low light, good chairs, no hurry. She asks about the places you have stayed and remembers the details, the lobby in Milan with the green marble, the room in Copenhagen with the perfect reading lamp. Supper is elegant and unhurried, and she never once glances at a phone. She talks about music without a trace of pretension, about scales on a Sunday morning and a string quartet that once made her forget to breathe. Walking back past the lit doorways of Albemarle Street she grows quieter, contented and entirely present.
Three questions for Samanta
A small hotel in Lisbon with a tiled staircase and the river visible from breakfast. I have never found a lamp I liked better than the one in that hallway.
Scales, slowly, for ten minutes. It is boring and it is the whole secret. Everything beautiful rests on something dull done properly.
Practise vocabulary, sleep for exactly two hours, and read the hotel pages of the in-flight magazine. I am a very easy person to sit beside.
