On Karolina

Karolina could name the architect of nearly every facade between Piccadilly and the river; she volunteers it only on request. Discretion is her resting state. 174 cm, slim, upright in the manner of a child raised on a piano stool. Black hair, straight, long. Brown eyes. Her evening style is clean and exact: a black column dress, a tailored coat, one piece of silver. Nothing there is accidental.

Poised and witty, with a dry humour that lands a beat after you expect it. Late twenties. Careful English and a fine ear for the absurd. She still plays most days, largely Schubert, and follows opera closely enough to hold firm opinions about staging. Weekends she walks a city one street at a time, eyes lifted, because that is where the interesting details live. Ask which London building she would rescue from a fire and she answers at once, then changes her mind twice.

In this quarter her evening often starts at St James's Church on Piccadilly, Wren's red brick and pale stone, where a recital sometimes fills the early evening. Then a few hundred steps west to the Rivoli Bar at The Ritz, a jewel box of a room, for one drink before supper. She will point out which details are original, and which are merely very good copies, in a voice pitched for you alone.

She lives in Covent Garden. For introductions she crosses to Piccadilly and the older hotels of St James's. Her ladder begins at £600, set out on rates; booking reaches Octavia at any hour.

// Octavia's noteKarolina plans ahead and appreciates guests who do the same. A recital, a drink at the Rivoli and supper need the dinner date, four hours at £1,800.

05 // an evening

As Karolina keeps it

She begins by looking up. Karolina meets you on the Piccadilly pavement and, before anything else, points out a cornice or a carved window you have passed a dozen times without seeing. Music at the church? Then you go in and sit at the back. No music? She leads you through the churchyard and tells you one thing about the building that you will repeat to someone else within a week. At the Rivoli she orders a dry martini and asks about your work with real interest and no small talk. Supper is unhurried. Her wit surfaces slowly, a remark here, an eyebrow there, and by the end you realise she has been the best informed person in every room you entered.

Three questions for Karolina

Something slow by Schubert, very quietly, until somebody asked me to stop. Nobody has yet, but I have never been brave enough to try.

I pick one architect and follow him for a day. It is the best way to understand a place, and you end up in streets no guidebook sends you.

No, but there are productions. The music is always forgiven. The directors, less often.
