On Cindy

Cindy checks the wind before she checks her phone. A sailor's habit, and a telling one: she turns up to an evening the way good crew turn up to a boat, early, cheerful, ready for whatever the sky does next. Waves of blonde, long. Blue eyes, very clear. 168 cm and slim, dressed simply and brightly, a pale dress, bare arms, a light jacket slung over one shoulder, all carried with the looseness of someone whose day starts on a yoga mat. Rain does not trouble her in the slightest; it improves the photographs.

Easygoing is the word people reach for, and it undersells her. Quick, sporty, properly curious, she listens with her whole face. Mid twenties; English with an open, sunny warmth. A small camera lives in her bag. She photographs light rather than landmarks, a reflection sliding across a bus window, a shadow on Portland stone, and she will show you the single frame from the day she is proud of. The rest she deletes without sentiment.

For an evening by Green Park she likes Hide on Piccadilly, ideally a table at the long windows, where the park goes green to blue to black while the courses arrive. She orders lightly and talks plenty. Afterwards, weather permitting, ten minutes under the plane trees before the hotel.

Chelsea is home. Hotels along the edge of Green Park are twenty minutes away, often less. Rates open at £600 for the hour and are listed in full on rates; write to Octavia with the time you have in mind.

// Octavia's noteCindy is at her best in daylight and early evening. A lunch that becomes an afternoon walk, two hours at £1,100, is what I suggest to anyone meeting her for the first time.

05 // an evening

As Cindy keeps it

Expect her a few minutes ahead of time, smiling, windswept if the city has any wind to offer. Cindy likes to open with a walk rather than a drink, even a short one across the park, because people talk more freely side by side. Before the restaurant door she has learned your home town and how you would spend a free Sunday. Dinner is bright and relaxed. She eats well, laughs readily and asks about the view from wherever you are staying, since she collects views the way others collect postcards. Later she may take one photograph of the skyline from a window, never of you, then put the camera away. Light from first minute to last, which is the whole point.

? // in her words

Three questions for Cindy

Forty pictures of reflections in puddles and one accidental photograph of my own thumb. The thumb is surprisingly good, actually.

Once, off the Isle of Wight, on a boat much smaller than it looked in the advert. I kept sailing anyway. Pride is an excellent cure.

Morning, before the city wakes up and starts asking for things. In the evening I would much rather be out somewhere, talking.
